A build-in coffee machine is a device used in households for preparation of coffee drinks.
Some variants of build-in coffee machines, typically those of high-end class, have an option
to connect to a house water drainage system. It is mandatory for those types of machines, to
ensure a reliable water export out of the machine. Presently, the machine uses a passive
drainage system on a free fall principle that works unreliably if the machine is not correctly
installed. In this thesis we have developed a new active drainage system that should work
properly regardless the installation. At the start of the development process, we defined
requirements and functions, to which the end solution had to comply. We searched for main
and auxiliary functional principles and created solution designs which were later collected
into a morphological matrix. Combinations of solution designs were assembled into
conceptual designs (concepts). Concepts were evaluated in two steps, firstly based on
expertise and later with prototype testing. The goal was finding a winning solution, for which
a detailed model was created. The winning solution of development process is the solution
with a peristaltic pump. Detailed model is expressed as a functional solution due to its
compliance with starting requirements, its rough design is suitable for series manufacturing.
Functional solution offers robust and reliable water drain from coffee machine and resolves
described issues of the existing system.
