The bachelor thesis presents an interpretation of the path experienced by Mene, the protagonist and first-person narrator of Sozaboy, a novel written by a Nigerian writer and activist Ken Saro-Wiwa. In the first part, the thesis deals primarily with the process of Mene’s growing up. It follows him from the point when he, in search of a higher social status and adventure, joins one of the sides in the Nigerian civil war. Then it describes how different traumatic experiences reshape his values and attitude towards the world. Conversely, in the second part, the thesis develops a possible continuation of Mene’s path beyond the story he tells us, which is done by following the hints that we can find in the novel, namely the language of the novel and the way it is written. In light of this continuation, the thesis finally offers a renewed look on the interpretation of Mene and some of the main ideas of the novel.
