Abstract

Title:Wool quality of the Jezersko – Solčava sheep
Abstract:
The aim of this master thesis was to determine the quality of wool in rams of the Jezersko-Solčava breed. We studied into which quality classes the wool of young rams finished the performance test at the test station was classified and which factors affected the wool quality traits (fibre diameter, comfort factor, spinning fineness, fibre length and curvature) and raw fleece weight. The wool samples (538) were classified into four quality classes according to the fibre diameter (0.19% fine wool, 7.43% medium wool, 44.80% coarse wool, 47.58% very coarse wool). The average raw fleece weight per ram was 1.58 ± 0.44 kg. The average fibre diameter was 29.96 ± 2.72 μm. The average spinning fineness was 29.56 ± 2.84 μm. The average comfort factor was 57.81 ± 15.63%. On average, the wool fibres were 80.90 ± 20.10 mm long. The average fibre curvature was 48.70 ± 8.36 degrees / mm. We found that most wool quality traits as well as raw fleece weight were significantly affected by year of shearing, month of shearing, test station, age of ram and flock of origin. A strong correlations were found between fibre diameter and comfort factor (-0.979), between fibre diameter and spinning fineness (0.967), and between comfort factor and spinning fineness (-0.937).
