Abstract

Title:The impact of aesthetic breast surgery on lactation and breastfeeding : diploma work
Abstract:
Introduction: Breast augmentation is one of the most common plastic surgeries worldwide today. Whether breast augmentation affects lactation and breastfeeding, the opinions of plastic surgeons and lactation consultants are different. Breast reduction is also one of the most common plastic surgeries. Breast reduction has been shown to effectively affect women’s quality of life by reducing back and neck pain, reducing anxiety and depression, and headaches. Purpose: The purpose of diploma work is to determine how breast surgery affects the establishment of lactation and breastfeeding. Methods: We used a descriptive review of Slovenian and foreign literature for the thesis. Slovenian and foreign literature was obtained through remote access of the Digital Library of the University of Ljubljana in the databases CINAHL, PubMed/Medline, ScienceDirect, Scopus, as well as through other databases, and with the web browser Google Scholar. Results: Aesthetic breast surgery disrupts the breastfeeding pattern in the first month of a baby’s life. Breast reduction surgery has a greater impact on breastfeeding than breast augmentation surgery compared to women without any breast surgery. After nipple surgery, the function of breastfeeding should be preserved unless a surgical technique damages the milk ducts. Discussion and conclusion: Breast and nipple surgery are risk factors that make breastfeeding difficult or impossible. Therefore, it is necessary to talk to the patient about the possibility of breastfeeding after the operation and its complications before any procedure.

Keywords:breastfeeding, lactation, breast augmentation, breast reduction, nipple surgery, nipple bleaching, safety, silicone implants.
