Abstract

Title:POVERTY AND SOCIAL EXCLUSION IN SLOVENIA AND COMPARISON WITH ITALY
Abstract:
Poverty and social exclusion are two very current concepts known all around the world. Literature shows that every author characterises poverty and social exclusion in a different way as both topics have many different definitions. The theoretical part describes poverty and social exclusion, types of poverty, ways to measure poverty and social exclusion. The thesis deals with poverty and social exclusion in Slovenia and Italy based on comparison of both countries. The purpose of this thesis is to define poverty and social exclusion in Slovenia and in Italy and to demonstrate the actual situation in both countries. The thesis will explore how the poor and socially excluded are coping with each country’s measures and whether the situation has improved in recent years. The aim of the thesis is to demonstrate what poverty and social exclusion mean and how they are measured, to identify which groups of people are at high risk of poverty, and to explore the role and cause of poverty and social exclusion. Furthermore, the aim is to determine the differences on this matter in Slovenia and Italy. During the research, it was found that poverty and social exclusion, both in Slovenia and Italy, are slowly declining. According to Eurostat data, which was used to compare both countries, poverty is much more present in Italy than Slovenia. The latest data from 2019 have been quite encouraging as poverty and social exclusion are slowly declining, but due to the corona crisis in 2020, it is possible that the percentage will start to rise again and severe poverty may occur again.
