Three zinc(II) and one copper(II) coordination compounds with 4-aminobenzoic acid (HL) have been described. These compounds are [CuCl2(HL)2] 1, [ZnCl2(HL)2] 2, {[Zn(L)2(H2O)](H2O)}n 3 and [Zn(L)(N3)]n 4. For the mononuclear compounds 1 and 2, the title acid, as the ligand, binds neutrally via the nitrogen atom. On the other hand, in the case of the polynuclear compounds 3 and 4 coordination takes place via the nitrogen and oxygen atom of the anionic L, and additionally via the azide anions for 4. The basic formula units are also linked by the hydrogen bonds. Elemental CHN analysis was used to check the proportion of a particular element and thus compliance with the formula obtained from a specific structure. Furthermore, the IR and electron spectroscopy data were compared and all are in agreement with the present ligands (IR) and similarities within coordination spheres (UV-Vis).
