Abstract

Title:Evaluation of the Project Enabling the Elderly Transport with Volunteer Drivers
Abstract:
In the theoretical part, I first presented the topic of risks in old age, where I particularly highlighted social and spatial exclusion in connection with the mobility of the elderly. Research already made, has shown that access to many services in rural areas is limited, but at the same time the inadequacy of public transport presents a critical issue. The current situation therefore calls for innovative solutions in the area of mobility of the elderly, which is why I have chosen as a potential example of good practice in this area the project Enabling the Elderly Transport with Volunteer Drivers, which is researched in the empirical part. In theory, I have described the local community and social work as two important factors for the prevention of exclusion in old age. I have analyzed the formal presentations of care that contribute to the process of intergenerational solidarity at the meso level. Finally, in theory, I have covered the importance of informal community volunteering, which the selected evaluation project is based upon. In the empirical part of the thesis, I presented the findings of a qualitative research where the project Enabling the Elderly Transport with Volunteer Drivers in the municipality of Središče ob Dravi was examined; Središče ob Dravi being one of the smaller rural municipalities in our country. Data were obtained from the elderly, volunteer drivers and the project contractor (municipality). In the evaluation of the project, I examined reasons for participation of those involved, purposes of transportation of the elderly; I evaluated their satisfaction, opportunities for further participation in the project and collected suggestions for improvement of the project implementation in the future. I also researched the situation of the elderly, focusing on strategies for tackling spatial exclusion, everyday risks, and the forms of help they would need or are already receiving. I have found that the elderly had decided to use transport due to ill health, inaccessible help from others, and several structural risks that pose weaknesses of the rural environment. Despite the reduced possibilities, the environment also offers advantages that have made it easier to organize and make the project accessible. Most of them use transportation to access general services, especially the healthcare. They evaluate the project having a positive contribution, but nevertheless suggest the purchase of a personal car that is more easily accessible for the elderly. They also draw attention to the excessive exploitation of transport, give negative feelings of shame and express the need to repay the aid received. The vast majority would continue their involvement in the project, as many depend on this transport. This need is also perceived by the contractor. At the end of the thesis, I listed appropriate recommendations on the conduct of the project, suggestions for improvements for the development of new services in the municipality and for research in this area in the future.
