The paper discusses the initial period of Slovene Studies in Slovakia after 1918, as well as the gradual rise of interest in Slovene culture in Slovakia between 1919 and 1942. Slovene Studies in Slovakia and Slovak-Slovene relations developed in two stages. In the first, in the 1920s, the institutional background was created (Comenius University, the Slovak National Theatre and a new cultural and literary periodical were founded), and this institutional background also facilitated the promotion of Slovene culture and arts in Slovakia. In the second stage, in the 1930s and early 1940s, there was a significant rise in the reception of Slovene culture in Slovakia (the number of translations from Slovene literature, articles on Slovene culture and literature in Slovak periodicals, staging Slovene drama in the Slovak National Theatre, and so on). In this period, Slovene language studies (lectureship) at the Faculty of Arts at Comenius University in Bratislava were established.
