Literary expressionism appeared in Slovene poetry rather late. Judging by the leading literary journals of the time, such as Dom in svet and Ljubljanski zvon, certain characteristic expressionist elements can be discerned in Slovene poetry in 1919. Although these elements are explained by Slovene literary studies in different ways, proclaiming different poets as expressionists, in the initial phase the only real representatives of poetic expressionism in Slovenia were Miran Jarc and Anton Podbevšek. The majority of other poetic motifs that might be described as expressionist, such as that of the train or technical constructions, or descriptions of the horrors of war, were still written about using neo-Romantic or symbolist poetics. This applies to poets such as Fran Albreht, Pavel Golia, Alojzij Remec, Joža Lovrenčič and Anton Vodnik.
