The article presents the academic and professional work of the brilliant (comparative) linguist, Slavist and Slovene Studies specialist, Academician Professor Dr Fran Ramovš (1890-1952) in the first half of his productive creative life until the foundation of the Slovene university in 1919, placing it in the social and academic framework of the time. It is evaluated especially from the point of view of the experts on his outstanding linguistic oeuvre, of his correspondents and through his own thoughts and reflections. Initially, his organisational role in establishing the Slovene university is also emphasised.
