Abstract

Title:
Factors affecting the maintenance of personal financial records
Abstract:
Financial literacy is one of the most important skills to ensure a high quality of life. Even though there are many different definitions of financial literacy, most include the understanding of basic financial terms as well as the knowledge of keeping financial records. Research in Slovenia and abroad has shown that financial literacy is low, which can negatively impact on the financial security of a person. I conducted research among 125 adults of different professions. I was interested in how well they keep financial records and whether this differs between different professions as this is information that I wasn’t able to find in existing research. The research shows that businesspeople keep their financial records most diligently and with the most regularity, while the opposite is true for waiters. The research also shows that in general men keep financial records with more regularity than women, but the difference is negligible. The percentage of people who do keep financial records is largest between the ages of 41 and 50. On the basis of the achieved education the result have shown that the keeping of personal financial records increases with higher education. Those who do keep financial records usually do so with the help of a notebook. Research also shows that waiters, shop assistants, nurses and businesspeople have a similar view on the importance of keeping financial records. They view it as very important, they believe it helps people save more money, it helps them with having a better overview of their financial situation and it prevents them from going into debt. Research also shows that financial literacy is low, so it should be introduced and taught to children through a systematic and well-planned approach starting in primary school (through continuous learning and in different subjects) and continuing in secondary school.
