My BA thesis presents the illustration and the design of a board game intended for children with difficulties in speech and sound production. The designed game is meant to be used in the starting point of the therapy, when children, their parents and the therapist are getting to know each other.
The first three chapters discuss the main aspects of game design. Initially, I define the field of illustration and then classify my illustrations as popular-scientific illustrations, as the game has a defined therapeutic purpose. Since the thesis is based on the function of board games, I focused on the analysis of board games. In this first section, I also look into the field of Speech Therapy, Speech Therapists, and the role of play in speech therapy.
The following two chapters expound the conceptual structure behind the game and its practical design. In this first part, I describe the process of designing and creating the practical section of the so called A Thousand and One Paths game. I present the process in its entirely: from the first sketch and mock-up to the technical design of the game.
Ergo this board game is a playful tool in Speech and Language Therapy. With this board game, I wanted to create a game that will be able to help the therapists to conduct and execute Speech Therapy’s exercises and to plan new games.
