Abstract

Title:The effects of selected factors on inaction inertia
Abstract:
Inaction inertia is a phenomenon where bypassing an attractive opportunity in the past results in a lower likelihood of acting on a subsequent similar, but less attractive opportunity. Research on the causes of inaction inertia has provided us with mixed and often incongruent results. The purpose of this study was to review the previous research on inaction inertia and design an experiment that would include the majority of all potential causes of inaction inertia. My goal was to induce the inaction inertia in both experimental groups and examine the effects of various inaction inertia factors. The study was conducted on a sample of 320 young adults, who were presented with an online scenario about purchasing plane tickets. After reading the scenario, they responded to questions regarding four possible causes of inaction inertia: experienced regret, anticipated inaction regret, anticipated action regret, and subjective valuation. The two experimental groups differed in the attractiveness of the missed opportunity, while the control group had no information about the previously missed opportunity. My findings confirmed inaction inertia as a multidetermined phenomenon. Anticipated inaction regret and subjective valuation emerged as important predictors of action likelihood and both factors also mediated the effect of difference in attractiveness on inaction inertia. The studied phenomenon is thus influenced by cognitive and motivational factors. However, further studies are needed to draw more reliable and valid conclusions about the cause-and-effect relationships behind the inaction inertia.
