The master's thesis deals with the icon Nursing Madona with Child from the National Gallery of Slovenia. The provenance of the icon is not known before 1947, but after that year it was unclear until 1974, when it was taken over by the National Gallery of Slovenia. The purpose of the present thesis is to deal with the icon from different perspectives, thus placing it in a broader art-historical context. There are three key areas for dealing with an icon: the origin of painting to which the icon belongs and its naming, the complex iconographic motif and the provenance of the icon. The chapter of the description of the icon and the frame is followed by a chapter on the condition of the icon panel and frame and the punched decoration of the icon are analyzed on the basis of conservation-restoration photo documentation from 1974 and of IR and UV photographs. The second part of the thesis begins with a chapter on the practice of worshiping Eastern icons in the West, followed by an outline of painting, to which the icon is attributed in the literature discussed so far, and origin and characteristics of this art language. The second to the last chapter analyzes the complex iconographic motif of the icon, and the last one concentrates on the problem of the icon provenance.
