Abstract

Title:
In a nutshell: idioms and metaphors within the Helen Doron methodology - An analysis of idioms from a cognitive linguistic perspective
Abstract:
In a nutshell: idioms and metaphors within the Helen Doron methodology This Master's thesis attempts to illuminate the question of which processes are involved in the creation of meaning in the idioms that are taught as part of the Helen Doron methodology for teaching the English language; it aims at providing evidence that the meanings of idioms are not entirely arbitrary, but are motivated by conceptual metaphors and the images that speakers associate with certain constituent parts. I will dive deep into the waters of the Helen Doron methodology of teaching English and fish out the principles that characterize this particular methodology and make it unique. Special attention will be given to how this methodology accords with the cognitive linguistic approach to idioms. The intention of the practical part of the thesis is to perform a detailed analysis of the selected idioms; more precisely, I will provide their meaning in English as well as Slovene and the metaphors they represent. I will also identify the cognitive mechanisms at work and show how these idioms are taught within the Helen Doron methodology of teaching English.
