The thesis deals with one of the greatest Polish poets of the twentieth century, Wisława Szymborska. Ambiguity, irony, metaphoric language, humour, the seeming lightness of poems, but nevertheless a deep and important message, the eternal bewilderment and astonishment over the world we live in, are the main characteristics of her poetry. In her works, she explores variety of themes, but the main and the most frequently discussed one is the theme of a person in all possible aspects.
The purpose of the thesis is to find existential issues and parallels in connection with existentialism that can be found in her poetry. The analysis is limited to one collection of poems from the early 1990s - The End and the Beginning (Polish: Koniec i początek). The collection was published in 1993 and is considered as her most established work before she received the Nobel Prize in 1996.
