Introduction: A student is a person who enrols in a higher education institution and is educated according to an undergraduate or postgraduate study program. During their studies, many choose to work through various agencies for student work. Students who have scholarships, as well as those without one, full-time and part-time students, decide to work while studying, having a student status. In case they do not receive other income, they have to provide their own that is why student work is desirable and sometimes existentially necessary. Purpose: The purpose of the research was to determine the number of full-time nursing students in Ljubljana who perform student work during their studies and to present their reasons for (not)working. We also wanted to find out the areas of student work and the reasons for them, as well as the impact of student work on the study and students. In addition to the above, we also wanted to identify suggestions for improving student work in the field of healthcare. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with an online survey questionnaire. It included a sample of 121 full-time students of all three years of the 1st level of nursing studies and graduates. The collected data in the academic year 2020 was analysed and presented with the help of website EnKlikAnkete and Microsoft Excell program Results: Student work among students is common. 74 % of respondents do student work, half of which work in healthcare. Earnings are mostly spent by students on living needs such as food, study supplies, and living expenses. Respondents cite lack of time and workload as the main reasons for not working, and suggest higher pay, a more flexible schedule, better relationships and coverage of transportation and food costs. Discussion and conclusion: Despite the fact that many students do their work through student agencies, students do not know their rights and duties. There is still a significant proportion of students who do not work in health care for various reasons. Those reasons should be eliminated and improved. Improvements would be needed especially in terms of equal treatment of students, interpersonal relationships and better payment for the work itself.
