Abstract

Title:The black death epidemic in Dubrovnik and dalmatian cities
Abstract:
The thesis presents the plague epidemic, which is also called the Black Death because of its appearance. The Black Death spread to Europe from Asia with merchant ships. It affected the whole Europe, so Dubrovnik and the towns on the east coast of the Adriatic Sea were affected, too. The Black Death was present in the fourteenth century and it reached Dubrovnik in 1348. At that time, Dubrovnik was a trading town under the administration of the Venetian Republic. The town had developed trading links. We cannot determine the direction from which the epidemic came to the town, but it was probably by the sea with merchant ships or military galleys. The plague of the fourteenth century is described in many historiographies, yet there are only few reliable sources. Most of them are chronicles. The consequences of the plague affected the demographic picture of all places the plague reached. We cannot determine the exact number of deaths as there is no information about the exact population. Population loss in Dubrovnik is estimated at between 1000 and 10000 deaths.
