Municipality of Črnomelj has been actively dealing with the refugee border crisis for these past few years. The region that has faced brunt of the crisis is area by Kolpa river. While dealing with refugees the area has also been dealing with its own social and economical problems, the source of those being regions peripheral characteristics. The activities of the security authorities are mainly focused on border protection, interception of illegal migrants and the search for individual smugglers or smuggling networks. The effectiveness of border control is rather poor, despite the technical barriers, as the possibilities for illegal crossings are still wide open. The most exposed are the inhabitants of border towns or villages. The locals are mainly facing the consequences of the measures taken at the state level related to border protection. Interventions in the border area and the environment force residents to adapt in the field of agriculture, tourism and transport.
