We can find the first beginnings of railway transport back to the 16th century and till nowdays represent an important subsystem of the entire transport system.
The railway transport has a lot of advantages and disadvantages. The main disadvantage in obsolescence of infrastructure, which is a consequence of investing in other transport industries. The main advantage, which will take effect in the future is independance from other transports. That will lead to better efficiency and safety.
In Slovenia is the main provider of railway service Slovenian Railways d.o.o. Passenger traffic covers a total of 590 train paths (within slovenian and international paths). In railway cargo transport there a few other providers. In Slovenia according to the latesy statistical data, it represents the amount of cargo transport by rail only a fifth of all cargo transport. However, in 2015 the Government of the Republic of Slovenia took a decision on the strategy for the development of railway transport in the period until 2030.
Rail transport in EU is characterized by tehnical and infrastructural diversity, which present also a problem. But, EU sees rail transport as a more cost-effective and time-efficient alternative to road transport, so they are working to improve the development of the TEN-T network.
Modern technologies are developed worldwide, especially high-speed railways, which can reach an average speed up to 250 km/h, which can be an alternative to na air transport.
The future is mainlz represented bz fully automated cargo and passenger transport. By 2018, there are 19 countries where run fully autonomous trains on the subways.
