Abstract

Title:Yield and quality of garlic bulbs (Allium sativum L.) regarding to the planting date
Abstract:
The purpose of the research was to determined, the difference in yield and bulb quality of two different varieties of garlic regarding the two different planting dates. The experiment was carried out at the Laboratory Field of the Biotehnical Faculty in Ljubljana, between November 2017 and July 2018. In the experiment we tested variety 'Gardos' and domestic Slovenian variety 'Ptujski spomladanski'. The experiment was performed in two planting date (autumn and spring), in 5 repetitions. Before planting, we randomly selected 10 bulbs on which the following quality characteristics of garlic bulbs were measured: the mass of garlic bulbs, the diameter of the bulbs and the number of cloves in each bulb. On spring, the number of survived plants were counted and at both varieties the survived rate was 89%. The yield was harvested in July. The garlic was then left to dry for about one month. After that, 10 randomly bulbs were selected from each repetition and measured in the same manner as the planting material. We established that the highest yield was at variety 'Gardos' planted in autumn (13.0 t/ha), followed by the same variety, planted in spring (12.6 t/ha). Lower yield was recorded at variety 'Ptujski spomladanski' (7.6 t/ha in autumn and 6.0 t/ha in spring). Some differences in quality characteristics regarding the planting dates were also showed. Autumn planted date influenced the bulb mass, which was decline for 20% at variety 'Gardos' and for 25% at variety 'Ptujski spomladanski' relative to planting material. Regarding the planting material, also the number of cloves was lower in garlic bulbs of variety 'Gardos' (for 35%) from autumn planting date and at variety 'Ptujski spomladanski' (for 38%) from spring planting date.
