This work shows the use of celestial navigation to determine the position of the ship in Electronic Chart Display and Information system, also known as ECDIS. ECDIS is recognized as the official replacement for paper or nautical charts, so it must allow the navigator to accomplish everything as he would with the normal paper charts. This means that it must allow the user to draw position lines or determine a position using sky navigation, although it does not support the use of sky navigation. The thesis shows possible solutions and examples for the use of ECDIS to perform sky navigation.
