The diploma thesis mentions different facts about traditional and modern means of navigation
which is in the present day mostly carried out by the help of ECDIS (Electronic Chart Display
and Information System). Many maritime organizations are striving towards increasing the
safety and productivity of our planets fleet. One way to do that is by improving the capabilities
of ships for correct navigation with the use of digital route planning and monitoring. With the
research of different tasks that needed to be carried out by deck officers in analogue ways we
wanted to present how many mathematical and hand skills specific tasks were required in order
for them to be done correctly and consequently tried to point out the advantages and limitations
of ECDIS. We mentioned a couple of primary traits and functions that the system is able to
carry out and provide us with more natural route planning and increased safety by using
different means of alarming and indicating certain malfunctions, errors, unexpected problems
and possible collisions. Besides all the positives, ECDIS also requires additional training of the
user so that he becomes familiarized with the system. Given all the positive things that ECIDS
provides by combining the use of hardware and software, it is still not perfect. We personally
believe that we cannot get rid of all disadvantages in any given thing because by continually
improving it and its capabilities we will always, unintentionally, create chances for a new
weakness. ECDIS is a vast and positive achievement in the nautical world, but it can, at least
in some instances give us a false sense of safety.
