Vuk Branković, Serbian nobleman form 14th century is a historical personality and a mythologized character of Serbian folk poetry. Through folk poetry echoes his prestige but he is also demonized as a main villain and traitor in battle of Kosovo. Myth of his betrayal developed gradually but he became a symbol of greatest betrayal in Serbian memory. Modern historiography denies his alleged betrayal. The myth probably developed because Vuk became the most important Serbian nobleman after the battle, substituting prince Lazar. He might have really retreated with his army as a part of war tactic, nevertheless the folk couldn’t accept Serbian defat and therefore needed someone to blame. Folk poetry can offer a lot of useful information and insights if used together with historiography.
