The door handle is one of the earliest inventions of mankind, yet it is still considered to be among the most commonly used serial products in our living environment. Despite its primal function of opening and closing doors, it must also blend in with the surrounding architectural elements. As well as being a crucial architectural element, it also bears a significant aesthetical importance. Following the principles of usability and appearance, designers are expected to offer innovative, perfect, modern and aesthetic solutions.
This BA thesis showcases a line of illuminated door handles, implemented on the designs of a standard door handle, a door knob and a push/pull door handle. While these designs are functional and aesthetically pleasing, they are also sustainable and ergonomic. The handles are illuminated at night, thus enabling a faster, smoother and safer transition between areas. Their form is simple, inconspicuous and designed to fit various architectural surroundings. The prevailing material is wood, which gives the handle warmth. The chosen form strives towards the balance between shape and functionality of the handle.
