Abstract

Title:German Phraseological Units with Diminutives
Abstract:
The main topic of the following thesis are German idioms that include a diminutive constituent. No less than 70 idioms with a diminutive were analysed. They were found in the Duden dictionary (11th volume) and were furthermore researched online; the sources are cited beside the idioms, respectively. The idioms appear mainly in newspapers as well as on websites. As a reference the online dictionary Digitales Wörterbuch der deutschen Sprache was mostly used. Both dictionaries with their examples were helpful to identify the connotation of the idioms. The first hypothesis states that most idioms are connoted. They are classified according to the system of connotation and have either a positive, negative or neutral connotation. Moreover, the style is determined with most idioms and the second hypothesis states that most idioms belong to the conversational discourse. Based on the results of the thesis, the first (most idioms are connoted) and the second (most idioms are conversational) hypothesis can be confirmed in conclusion.
