This diploma thesis tackles the analysis of the changes in the position of the cultural concept of "čefur" in Slovenian public discourse, and with the complex destiny of that concept in the everyday life of the Slovenian citizen. Stabilized as a pejorative signifier for one specific demographics of Slovenian citizen, as an instrument of tarnishing and the denial of equality, the word Čefur is presently going through the process of normalization or neutralization. Contemporary cultural concept is still used as a negative/pejorative device (used to tarnish or discriminate individuals and groups), and as such is often tabooed in some segments of politically correct public communication. At the same time, it is used as quite normalized word with socially criticizing or emancipatory potential, above all in the processes of minoritaria self-identification, and depending on situational or communicational context. This thesis is relating changes in discursive position of the word, and material circumstances of the tangible life of minority groups of citizen identified or self-identified as Čefurji. While doing so, it is combining qualitative and qualitative methods, and encompasses theoretical and historical chapters, discourse analysis of the media-related and literary sources, empirical quantitative analysis, and auto ethnographic and performative narration, sources and appendix.
