Monitoring cell health is an important part of sustaining cell culture growth. To determine live cell number, cell viability assays are used. Measuring other parameters, crucial for normal cell functioning, is done with cell vitality assays. Some of these parameters are cell membrane permeability, cell membrane potential, enzymatic and metabolic activity, DNA synthesis and cellular proliferation and also the rate of oxidative stress. In vitro assays are classified according to the measuring method. These groups are dye exclusion assays, colorimetric, fluorimetric and luminometric assays. Cell assays are based on vital intracellular biochemical reactions and reagents with conversions simple to detect.
