The purpose of the diploma thesis was to create a women's collection with a circus theme, based on the research of plastic bags and how to create textile material using hand techniques. The diploma thesis includes the design and implementation of a sustainable collection, in which plastic bags are transformed into a useful piece of clothing or fashion accessory. The weaving of plastic bags, digital printing and the inspiration behind the collection create silhouettes with an emphasis on the contrast between wide and narrow. The female silhouette has changed greatly over time. I drew inspiration from the 1970s. Initially from the hot pants that were worn the most during those years, which then led me to the roller-skating style.
The theoretical part of the diploma thesis presents the problem of plastic pollution, microplastics, and solutions for optimal handling of plastic after use. It describes plastic recycling and the plastic bag. The hand weaving technique is presented, as I first painted the plastic bags, and then cut and weaved them into the material, which was later tailored. It also describes the digital printing used to print patterns on the fabric and the fashion of the 70s. The theoretical part also includes a presentation of the collections of fashion designers who have included plastic, weaving or digital printing in their collections.
The experimental part of the thesis describes the inspiration and concept behind the collection. It also describes the techniques of using plastic bags in the collection and their purpose. This part also presents the atmosphere of the collection, the color palette, and the target group. The collection mostly contains wearable pieces. By properly combining the pieces, an individual can decide for which occasion they will be worn. The aim of the diploma thesis was to make experimental and wearable pieces from plastic bags or recycled materials.
