The aim of this master's thesis is to engage textile integrally. The theoretical part provides a historic overview of textiles' role in human life and the ways in which it represented human symbols, stories and metaphors. Its role in contemporary postindustrial society is explained through concepts of lifestyle and trend while its role in visual arts is explored in the period from WWII until today. For these purposes, the most commonly used textile creation techniques are described and examples of contemporary textile art pieces are highlighted, also in relation to the practical part of the paper.
The meaning of selected textile pieces as elements of everyday life is addressed in the practical part of the paper. An intuitive intervention into existing textile pieces alters their original purpose, message and appearance. Different techniques are used to transform the pieces, including screen printing, patchwork, sewing, destruction, multiplication etc. The final result of the masters paper are four transformed textile pieces, including a female skirt-suit, a shirt, a sleeping bag and a knitted skirt. Each piece represents a chapter unto itself and therefore the selected pieces do not form a single collection but rather independent art pieces. They are represented through photographs, a short video and a GIF.
