Abstract

Title:Traffic-Geographical Aspects of Poljanska Bypass of Škofja Loka
Abstract:
In 2015, after several decades, the Poljanska bypass was realized. Due to the long-lasting unacceptable traffic situation, it was accompanied by high expectations. This paper thesis presents a broader picture of the bypass in the research of its traffic-geographical impacts that it brings to that area. The main purpose of building the new road was to relieve the transit point, thus improving the living environment for the local population and to increase transport efficiency and safety. The research approach is based on a comparison of data on the situation before and after the construction of the bypass. The findings show that the bypass generally met expectations and significantly reduced the traffic load of the city centre, but there are some less expected findings that confirm the thesis of a comprehensive handling of traffic issues. The bypass though was the main, but not the only major measure, which improved the city congestion, as all the final situation was achieved by traffic calming measures. Although safety has been fully improved, only minor forms of road accidents have been shown to be significantly reduced. The bypass has a positive impact on air pollution in the city centre, but its construction has meant the loss of many agricultural lands, most of them being grassland.
