In home care households live the elderly and people with disabilities, who are capable of an independent life, yet also in a need of care. In such households there is a greater possibility, that an emergency situation would occur. Nursing homes present an even greater danger, as among the patients there are often immobile people and people with dementia or functional disabilities. From fire safety aspects these sorts of buildings are very demanding and to decrease the risk of fire, passive, active and organisational measures have to necessarily be implemented. A distinct feature of such premises is a horizontal evacuation feasibility, which enables the mobility of the functionally disabled persons. To find out the awareness of the employees and get an insight how the fire safety measures look in practice, a survey was conducted among the employees of Sežana Nursing home. The results of the survey showed, that the awareness of fire safety measures is on satisfactory level, as the majority of the employees answered correctly on questions put. Although fire safety measures in Slovenian nursing homes are well respected, the issue lays with the lack of cadre as the younger generation is moving abroad or deciding to take up other jobs. This was also confirmed by this survey research, which showed that a large part of the employees is over forty years old.
