The master’s thesis Children’s Poetry of Svetlana Makarovič: Classification, Characteristic Themes and Ballad Roots deals with one segment of our great poet’s exceptional opus, which has thus far been largely overlooked. Svetlana’s poems for children are inextricably linked with her prose and dramatic works. They are also characterised by various versions which connect them to folk poetry. According to their origin and characteristics, her poems can be classified as lyrical pieces, essentially related to music, songs and poems. Although many of the poet’s lyrics are part of a broader context, they can still function as stand-alone autonomous works of art. Some themes and motifs appear throughout her opus, be it in the form of dark ballads or uplifting songs for children. Hence, her numerous works address the theme of violence, which she unconditionally rejects, the theme of masses, which is synonymous with the greatest of evils, and the active individual, who resists.
