Abstract

Title:Adaptation of education to a child with type 1 diabetes
Abstract:
The diploma thesis aimed to get an insight into how the educator and the educational assistant adapt the educational work to the child with type 1 diabetes. We wanted to find out what adjustments the boy with this disease needs in the educational institution. Diploma work has two parts. In the theoretical part, I firstly focused on the children with special needs and defined the legal basis with which we implement the guidelines and rights of children with special needs. Nowadays, many children with special needs are attending conventional types of kindergartens. However, there are also more and more long-term sick children who suffer from various chronic diseases, one of which is diabetes. In the theoretical part, I described the adaptations of long-term sick children. I also focused on what diabetes is, what types of diabetes we know, how is treated, what are the possible complications, and which actions can we take. As a future educator, I dedicated one part of the diploma work to the role of the educator and the importance of cooperation between the educator and the parent of children with special needs. I also described the adjustments that a child with diabetes needs in kindergarten, which the educator must take into account in their educational work. The empirical part is based on qualitative research and semi-structured interviews with an educator, educational assistant and personal assistant of a child with type 1 diabetes. I found out that in adapting educational work, the most important adjustments are physical activity, daily routine and feeding. Child workers are well educated about diabetes and with the handling of devices that the child needs because of the nature of their disease (insulin pump and blood sugar meter). Findings provide educators with an insight into diabetes and into what type of adjustments such a child needs in kindergarten. They will also help in the organization and implementation of work in an educational institution.
