The North Adriatic Container Terminals have been steadily increasing their throughput over the years. In order to integrate their competitiveness in the international market, the ports were thus integrated into an association of northern Adriatic ports. Their container throughput is not negligible at European level, strategically favorable location of the ports could be additional competitive advantage for future throughput increase.
The first part of the Master’s thesis will present the ports and container terminals in the North Adriatic. An overview of the worldwide container throughput is also provided. Based on MDS Transmodal Limited study potential container throughput from 2010 to 2030 is assessed. There are also highlighted factors that could affect the competitiveness of Northern Adriatic ports and an overview of what has been happening with those factors in recent years.
The second part of the paper presents the development of container terminals in the Northern Adriatic and already implemented projects co-financed by the European Union. These projects have helped to increase the competitiveness of the mentioned group of ports, as well as projects that are still in progress and will be able to increase the competitiveness of ports in the coming years. In addition to European projects, the OBOR project is presented, which could in the coming years be affected by changes in goods flows and, consequently, throughput of containers in the North Adriatic.
