Abstract

Title:Urban Road Infrastructure in the Age of Autonomous Vehicles : master thesis
Abstract:
A quick development of technology vastly impacts our lifestyle. Car industry is witnessing exponential improvements thanks to the installation of driver-assistance systems which help to improve safety and comfort of driving. With new information and space detection technology full automation of driving is becoming our inevitable future. Along with the electrification this type of traffic flow will bring many advantages and changes to the infrastructure and traveling habits. One of the potentials is also the realization of vision 0. In the master thesis I deal with autonomous driving from the perspective of civil engineering. An overview of intelligent transport systems is carried out. Based on their way of functioning and limitations I suggest some solutions for the traffic infrastructure that are easy to implement. I focus on urban environment that involves pedestrians and cyclists. Highly automated light rail will enter the cities and autonomous vehicles will also be a part of public transport. In this wise higher mobility for children, elderly and disabled will be achieved. The service of car sharing and the exchange of information will both reduce the number of vehicles and eliminate the needs for parking surfaces. In order to provide the most relevant ideas, I included some trends in urban planning. A full advantage will be devoted to pedestrians and green infrastructure. The consciousness for the importance of food self-supply is being regained. Thus it is expected that road networks will be transformed, prohibiting the access for all of the vehicles.
