Diploma thesis titled Setting up the database to improve the oversight of the costumes at SNT Opera and Ballet Ljubljana is based on theoretical foundations of database design and building the database in Microsoft Access.
Primary purpose of this thesis is to present the basic functions of data system to the user and to prepare a product, serving to facilitate the storage and oversight of costumes in Ljubljana Opera House.
Theoretical part is divided in two parts. In first part, I present the Ljubljana Opera House, its beginning, functioning and current way of recording the information on costumes in Slovenia and abroad. In the second part I present the data system, part of which is also a database. I present all procedures to make a database, what are its elements and how it works. In this part I also present Microsoft Access program, in which the database is created. All the steps of usage and creation of individual objects in the program are described.
The experimental part sums up the procedure of creating a database from the design to final product. I present the software, the starting preparations in sketches and visual designs and steps to digitalize, obtain and enter the data. I describe the whole procedure of building the final database with the selected software.
The results section of this thesis consists of the presentation of the final product and discussion. To create this dabatase the information from the ballet Doctor Zhivago from 2015/2016 theatre season were used. The pieces of information needed were retrieved from manuscripts, stored in dressing rooms of Opera House. The database includes twelve interrelated tables, two of which have option for further update. Data can be entered or viewed with four different forms, and a report is included. This database is compliant with current needs of users.
