Migration is one of the most common global phenomena today. It has a significant impact on the life of the population from economic, social, cultural and political aspect. According to existing surveys of the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia, the largest number of immigrants comes from the former Yugoslavia. In my thesis, I focused on immigrants by defining the term migration, and outlining the types of migration, factors, integration, and current migration issues. In addition to the aforementioned, I also focused on the employment of migrants in Slovenia and the legislation under which immigrants are treated.
Through a social network, I conducted a semi-structured interview with immigrants from the former Yugoslavia to discover what challenges they face in finding a job, obtaining all the relevant and necessary documentation, and what kind of assistance they received from Slovenia. I also focused on reasons for migration, workplace relationships, and the integration process itself. I found out that all the interviewees pointed out discrimination. It turned out that during the job search process racism and hate speech represented the greatest problem for the immigrants, however, they had positive experience with officials, who helped them in their job search process. Compared to their native country, all interviewees pointed out that Slovenia had better living conditions and better living standard. In the conclusion of the thesis, I summarized the findings, and outlined suggestions for improvement and further research.
