The Babno Polje is the most highly lying field in set of Notranjsko podolje. Field is narrowed in the middle. It's distributed to smaller Croatian and larger Slovene field. In terms of its shape, location, economic use and hydrological conditions and the Babno polje significantly differs from other fields of the mentioned river basin. The Babno Polje has shaped in a typical Dinaric direction, along the Idrija Fault running across the field. The central part of Slovenian and Croatian field is covered by sediments. The higher, edge part of the field is made of limestone and dolomite from the Jurassic period and Cretaceous age and Triassic dolomite.
An area is well soaked, which is quickening the geomorphological processes.
The Babno polje has never been comprehensively presented from the geomorphologic perspectives. The morphological, morphometric, morphogenetic and morphostructural analyses has been done for the study area. Gained data were digitised. The contact of dolomite and limestone, have had an impact on the development of typical karst features (cave, doline) and
fluviokarst land forms (erosion gullies, dell, spring, swallowholes). Due to human activities in the area, other anthropogenic forms are also present in Babno polje (channel for regulation of water).
