Abstract

Title:Uncertain transition and distress of youth at the end of their studies
Abstract:
The difficult and uncertain life situation me and my peers have found ourselves in at the end of our studies has encouraged me to research the topic more broadly. I focused on the hardships, problems and fears of young people finishing their studies and what those problems and fears are related to. I was especially interested in the support (formal, informal) of youth, their needs and suggestions for easing the transition into living independently and improving their life situations. After completing their studies youth is facing housing issues as well as poor labour market conditions (unemployment of young masters and graduates). Overall conditions for transition into independent life are poor for young people completing their studies. The master's thesis consists of theoretical and empirical work. In the theoretical part, I discuss the life transitions of young people, the trends of those transitions, young people in the context of housing and employment. I establish a connection of the discussed topic with social work and psychosocial consequences of the situation of young people completing their studies. In the empirical part you can find the presented problem, research questions and the methodology of the conducted research. To capture more stories and views, I carried out and qualitatively analysed 10 interviews with different profiles of young people. Interviews were carried out with students living at home and in dormitory, students with disabilities, female and male students, and students of both, science and social sciences professions. Based on the conducted research, there is evidence showing the absence of housing policy for youth and unregulated conditions on the labor market affect the living situations of young people and push them into distress. Young people completing their studies are most burdened by housing issues and employment. They find the most support in their informal social network while they don't have the support of the state, which is why they most of their proposals relate to the state level. Young people want the state to provide support at the transition to living independently (finance, housing, employment, social security), they agree that the role of faculties in youth employment should be greater in order to gain more practical work experience within the faculty.
