In this thesis we have focused on designing innovative promotional packaging made of cardboard that is made from the invasive non-native plant acacia. The entire process of planning was based on the principle of ecological design. One of the main goals was to create an innovative and multi-purpose ecological product, a calendar, which would not need glue during its composition. In the theoretical section we have presented the basics of packaging and its functions. We have also described the properties of promotional packaging and of the product itself. In addition we have presented the importance of ecological design and circular economy, which is based on the principle of sustainable development. We have researched the Slovenian as well as the foreign market and included some examples of ecological promotional packaging. In the practical section we have presented the entire process of production, which began at the idea and sketch stage and ended at the final product. We analysed the basic, mechanical, superficial and structural properties of the high grammage ecological carton made from acacia and compared them to the most commonly used unilaterally coated white carton made of wood fibre. As had been expected the analysed properties were somewhat inferior, but that did not throw us off of achieving the final goal. We planned the design of the packaging in the program EngView Package & Display Designer by using the initial sketch. During this process, we came across quite a few problems regarding the design of the interior folds. Nonetheless, we arrived at the appropriate construction in the end. We designed the packaging in the program Adobe Illustrator, which is a professional software used for the design of vector graphics. We printed the final packaging with the UV inkjet printer and cut it with the cutting machine. The result of this thesis work is the environmentally friendly multi-purpose promotional packaging, the calendar, which can also be used as a storage item for pens and other office supplies.
