Abstract

Title:The spill of a new father: A practice upon the birth of a child
Abstract:
The spill is a practice, mostly occuring in the Prlekija region and in the past few years also frequently occuring in Prekmurje when a child is born. The practice orriginates from an act, when a new father is spilled with water or wine. This act later transformed into a celebration which is accompanied by numerous elements. The most common elements appearing were a stork, scattered wheat straw, scattered weed and the key component - wine or water. In the past, women were excluded from the practice and men were the ones celebrating and spilling the new father with wine or water. In modern times everybody can take part in celebrating and the practice apart from, in most cases, the mother and the newborn baby. The main question of the diploma thesis was what is the purpose. The author learns from co-speakers, the act (the spill) ensures the newborn baby will be healthy. There are many different explanations why the man is spilled with wine or water. The most common one is that the new father is a gander and you spill water on the father because of the connection between the gander and water. The second most frequent theory is that with spilling wine on the man you bless the father and it ensures good health of the newborn child.
