Abstract

Title:Paget-Schroetter Syndrome and exercise
Abstract:
Paget-Schroetter Syndrome (PSS) is one of the most frequent vein pathologies in young and healthy individuals who exercise regularly, and is becoming an increasingly important clinical problem in the sports world. This is a very rare diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis of axillary-subclavian vein that most frequently occurs in the dominant upper limb and is a result of strenuous physical activities that include intense, debilitating and repetitive movements of upper limbs. It is important to quickly recognize symptoms and signs, as well as fast diagnosis and beginning of treatment using anticoagulant therapy. Due to the condition’s relatively low incidence and unrecognizability, this syndrome remains unrecognized in young and therefore the diagnosis is too late. The main purpose of the master’s thesis was to raise awareness of young athletes, professional workers in sport, and present and future kinesiologists about the possibility of occurrence of this medical condition in various sports activities that mostly include repetitive movements of upper limbs, and direct them into early recognition of symptoms and signs. We used foreign literature, mainly scientific papers dealing with “effort thrombosis” and “Paget-Schroetter Syndrome”. In introduction, we defined a wider research area by description of vein thrombosis. Further, we described Paget-Schroetter Syndrome in relation to various sports activities. The description is based on foreign scientific papers that contains different clinical cases. The central part of the master’s thesis consists of a clinical case relating to own experience of the diagnosed deep vein thrombosis of axillary-subclavian vein in the upper limb. Based on this we described in details and highlighted that identification of the triggering factor of vein thrombosis of upper limbs and various recommendations and potential limitations regarding the chosen sports activities are of key importance in treatment of young and active individuals.
