Invasive alien species (IAS) present a threat to biotic diversity, health of the human population and the economy. Slovenia does not yet have a national strategy or action plan for dealing with IAS. For this reason the European strategy on IAS formed at the Bern Convention is presented and analysed in the dissertation. Based on the analysis the possibility of transfer of the European strategy on IAS into the Slovenian environment is presented. As required by the analysis, an overview of Slovenian legislation and international documents from the field of IAS, an overview of key stakeholders that contribute to the introduction of IAS to Slovenia and an overview of sectors and activities that must participate in the resolution of the problematic of IAS and in the formation of a national strategy for managing IAS was prepared. With the analysis of aims and key actions in the European Strategy on IAS it is proven that the transfer into the Slovenian environment is possible and can be a good foundation for the preparation of a national strategy for management of IAS, where it will be necessary to append the Slovenian legislation and establish a bureau at national level that will be responsible for the field of IAS and establish a unified IAS information point and a national IAS database. The annex of the dissertation contains a Slovene language version of the European strategy on IAS with Annex.
