The study discusses the importance and usefulness of forest stand maps and the possibility for their upgrade. Forest stand map is part of forest managament plans and is also important for planning and cooperation with forest owners. The survey of forest owners and foresters and the classification of forest stands and permanent sample plots were analyzed for forest management unit Adlešiči with total forest area of 7.876 ha. The survey was carried out with 35 forest landowners unit Adlešiči and foresters in the local units of Semič % Metlika and Črnomelj. Data of the stands were obtained from the forest stand maps and information on the permanent sample plots were obtained from the database of Slovenia forest service. Classification and analysis of forest stand types were carried out on 1.667 stands and 809 permanent sample plots. In forest management unit deciduous pole wood, old timber stands and pioneer forests prevail in surface. Anaysis of the survey showes that forest stand map is an important tool for regional foresters and is more often used by younger foresters. Map could be more useful for forest owners. The most important information on stand level for both groups are allowable cut, growing stock and guidelines for forest management. Map of forest stands should be upgraded with data of necessary intervention. Comparison of three methods of evaluation of growing stock shows that the average evaluations of growing stock on the level of unit is almost entirely consistent. Reliability of evaluation of growing stock is higher for stratified sampling, where we used data for stratification from permanent sample plots, then in method, where we used data from forest stand map. At the unit level estimation proved more reliable with statified sampling than with simple random sampling.
