Abstract

Title:Scavenging of wild boar (Sus scrofa l.) on carcasses of european roe deer (Capreolus capreolus l.) in Slovenia
Abstract:
We monitored wild boar scavenging (Sus scrofa L.) on 28 carcasses of roe deer (Capreolus capreolus L.) by the use of automatic video cameras in years 2011 and 2014 in Italy and Slovenia. Based on collected data, effects of wild boar density on the course of consummation of carcasses were estimated. Quickness of discovery and rate of found carcasses are highly affected by local density of wild boar. The average density of wild boar in quadrants where deer carcasses were found amounted to 2,4 animals/km% and in other quadrants 1,0 animals/km%. In Slovenia 40 % of carcasses were visited by wild boar and in Italy 75 %. For the discovery of carcasses in Slovenia, 12,5 days were needed, in Italy, in the region of Karst of Trieste 2,5 days were needed. Wild boar has an important impact on the availability of carrion to other scavengers. In current densities of wild boar, in Slovenia the influence of kleptoparasitism on lynx is probably minimal. In case of lynx expansion into the region of Karst of Trieste, lynx would probably be subjected to high degree of kleptoparasitism from wild boar.
