Abstract

Title:The competence analysis of work therapists in occupational activity centres in Slovenia
Abstract:
The diploma thesis analysed the competencies of work therapists who work with adults with special needs. Working with adults with special needs, who use the services of occupational activity centres, differs from other professions in the adaptability of the work therapists to the specific needs and abilities of the individual. We chose this field of study due to our personal interest in adults with special needs and consequently the job of the work therapists, who are in contact with them the most. The purpose of the diploma paper is to determine which competencies are needed for the work therapists at occupational activity centres in Slovenia. We focused on the study and analysis of the competencies needed for their work and which, in their opinion, have not been acquired through the national qualification. Work therapist is a social calling, which carries out a mobility service. In 2018 Slovenia employed 227.95 work therapists. In our diploma paper, we refer to work therapists' competencies acquired through the national qualification. There are 159 work therapists who completed the national qualification, and we included 97 of them in our analysis. The results were obtained with our own questionnaire. The survey enabled us an insight into the work therapists’ competencies after the competed national qualification. Based on the analysis of the results, we concluded that the most developed competency are organisational skills and the activity execution (an average level was 4.5). The weakest competency was handling administrative work (an average level was 3.8). The survey revealed that communication skills should be the most highly developed at practical work, too. Communication skills are well or excellently developed in 75% of all work therapists, and 98% believe that this should be evident in practical work as well. Competencies not acquired through the national qualification, but are needed for their work, are catering to people with special needs. The results of the survey can contribute to improving the existing educational programmes for work therapists and the development of new ones. They are also informative for occupational activity centres human resources teams for employment.
