Abstract
Uvod: Želeli smo ugotoviti dejavnike za izbor študija fizioterapije, poznavanje izbranega poklica, želje in načrte glede podiplomskega izobraževanja in poklicnih usmeritev.

Title:Factors that influence the decision for physiotherapy study, knowledge of the profession and preferred profesional field
Abstract:
Background: The aim of the study was to identify factors which influenced the decision to study physiotherapy, the knowledge of the profession, wishes and plans for postgraduate education and professional orientation. Methods: 222 1st and 3rd year students of physiotherapy at the Faculty of Health Sciences in Ljubljana participated in the study. Descriptive statistics and chi-square were used. Results: The most important factor to study programme was pleasure in working with people. Characteristics of physiotherapy as a profession were the need for the profession, attractiveness, appreciation of the profession, extensive knowledge, reputation and a reliable post. The biggest drawback of the profession was insufficient appreciation of physical therapists by doctors; there was a statistically significant difference between the sexes. The majority of the students were familiar with employment opportunities. They believed that it is easier to find job in Slovenia compared to abroad. The most desired work area was musculoskeletal physiotherapy and preferred workplace private practice; 3rd year students believed physiotherapy is not a well-paid profession, while 1st year students disagreed; the difference was statistically significant. Women considered physiotherapy as a well-paid profession and men not, the difference was statistically significant. Conclusion: Physiotherapy as a profession is not familiar enough in Slovenian society. This may be the reason why students created an ideal image of the profession. There is a need to increase interest in other fields of physiotherapy among young people.
