Abstract

Title:
Variability of spatio-temporal gait parameters in elderly women
Abstract:
Introduction: The purpose of our study was to determine the influence of gait speed on spatio-temporal gait parameters in three walking speeds: preferred, fast and slow walking speed in a group of elderly community dwelling women. Methods: Twenty-three women (73.5 ± 6.8 years) participated in the study. Participants were walking on 30 m elliptical path, one longer side of which included 7 m instrumented walkway GAITRite®. The data were analysed by Gaitrite software to determine the left and right step and stride times and lengths, and base of support widths. Results: Gait variability was the lowest for fast walking and increased with the decreasing gait speed. It was thus significantly larger at low speed as compared to preferred and fast walking speeds. Coefficient of variability was the largest at the low speed for the left step time (7.3 ± 5.63%) and for the base of support width (55.45 ± 68%). Conclusion: Gait speed significantly influenced gait variability. It is thus essential to take it into account when interpreting the spatio-temporal gait variability parameters.
