The thesis presents the field of heat storage tanks, their fundamentals and mutual comparison. The focus is on the use of phase change materials in heating and cooling. The European Union strives to achieve energy and climate goals with endeavour to renovate its building sector by giving priority to energy efficiency as well as considering deployment of renewable energies in order to secure global temperature increase below 2 K until 2030. The challenge in utilizing renewable energy sources is in its time unsteadiness when mismatch between production and demand occurs. With thermal storage integration into system that utilize renewable energy source it is possible to levelize mentioned mismatch between production from renewables and demand for heating or cooling of buildings. Thus thermal storage allows efficient utilization of renewable energy sources where among different materials of storing energy in heat or cold, phase change materials have advantage of having higher energy density at the small temperature difference.
